We've all been there – the exam is tomorrow and you're not as prepared as you'd like. While consistent studying throughout the semester is ideal, here's how to make the most of the time you have left.
What to Do the Day Before
Focus on high-yield material:
- Past exam papers (patterns often repeat)
- Topics your lecturer emphasised
- Summary notes and key concepts
- Formulas and definitions you need to memorise
Don't try to learn new material: It's too late for deep learning. Focus on consolidating what you already know.
Active vs. Passive Cramming
Do this:
- Test yourself with practice questions
- Explain concepts out loud (even to yourself)
- Write out key points from memory
Avoid this:
- Passively re-reading notes
- Highlighting without understanding
- Watching videos at 2x speed hoping something sticks
The Night Before
- Stop studying by 10pm: Your brain needs rest to consolidate memories
- Prepare everything: Student card, pens, calculator – lay it all out
- Set multiple alarms: You don't want to oversleep
- Avoid alcohol and caffeine: Both disrupt sleep quality
The Morning Of
- Eat breakfast: Your brain needs fuel
- Do a light review: Glance at your summary notes, don't study intensively
- Arrive early: Rushing increases stress
- Avoid anxious classmates: Their panic is contagious
During the Exam
- Read all questions first: Plan your time accordingly
- Start with what you know: Build confidence before tackling harder questions
- Attempt everything: Partial marks are better than no marks
- Watch your time: Don't spend too long on any single question
After the Exam
Regardless of how it went:
- Don't obsess over what you got wrong
- Focus on your next exam or take a well-deserved break
- Learn from this experience for next time
Remember: one exam doesn't define your worth or your future. Do your best with the time you have, and move forward.
